How can I install or remove community voices?

Community voices are voices that members of the TomTom community have recorded.

Note: This feature is not available on the following devices: GO 40, GO 50, GO 51, GO 60, GO 61, GO 400, GO 500, GO 600, Rider 400, Rider 40, GO 510, GO 610, GO 5000, GO 6000, GO 5100, GO 6100, Trucker 6000, START 40, START 50, START 60.

How you install or remove voices depends on the program used by your device. Find the correct instructions by selecting one of the options below.

Before you start

  • Make sure that your computer is compatible with MyDrive Connect and MyDrive Connect .
  • Make sure that you are using the latest version of MyDrive Connect. more
  • You need to have software version 10.200 or higher installed on your navigation device to use this feature. You can check the version on your navigation device. For instructions, see How do I find the device software and map versions?

Adding community voices

Instructions

A TomTom voice consists of 2 files, a .chk file and a .vif file. You can also add an image to go with your voice. In this case you should also upload a .bmp file.

To add a voice to your navigation device, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your navigation device to your computer. Switch on your device.
  2. Click the MyDrive Connect icon (Image or Image) in the Windows notification area or Apple menu bar.

  3. Click Manage community content.

  4. Click Add voice.
  5. Click Browse. You see a list of all files in your selected folder.
  6. Select the voice files (.chk, .vif and optionally .bmp files) on your computer that you want to put on your device.
    Note: The file names of the .chk, .vif and .bmp files must be identical.
    Depending on your browser, you can select more than one file at the same time by holding down the Ctrl key (or Command key on a Mac) and selecting each of the files in turn.
  7. Click Open. The webpage shows the selected voice.
  8. Click Install.

    The voice set is copied to your navigation device.

Removing community voices

To remove a voice from your navigation device, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your navigation device to your computer. Switch on your device.

  4. Click Remove next to the voice you want to remove from your device. Make sure you remove the .chk, .vif and .bmp files for the voice you want to remove.

Copying community voices

To copy a voice to your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your navigation device to your computer. Switch on your device.
  2. Click the MyDrive Connect icon (Image or Image) in the Windows notification area or Apple menu bar.

  3. Click Manage community content.

  4. Click Copy to computer next to the voice file on your device. A save to dialogue appears allowing you to specify the location for your voice files. You need to copy the .chk, .vif and .bmp file for the voice to your computer.

    The voice files are copied from your device to your computer. You may have to repeat this process to copy all the files you need for a voice to your computer.

Sharing community voices

Instructions

To share a voice with other TomTom users, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your navigation device to your computer. Switch on your device.
  2. Click the MyDrive Connect icon (Image or Image) in the Windows notification area or Apple menu bar.

  4. Click Copy to computer next to the voice on your device. A save to dialogue appears allowing you to specify the location for your voice. You need to copy the .chk, .vif and .bmp file for the voice to your computer.

    The voice files are copied from your device to your computer. You may have to repeat this process to copy all the files you need for a voice to your computer.
  5. Email the voice files to your friends or post them on the internet for sharing. Your friends can download the voice to their computer and use Browse to add the voice to their navigation device.
